Flaxby Golf & Country Club are one step closer to
fulfilling their long term aim of becoming one of the
premier golf clubs and leisure venues in the North of
England.
Already in place is a par 72, 18 hole Championship Golf
Course designed by leading golf architect David Hemstock.
Over 18,000 newly planted trees and several lakes were
formed to landscape the course. Flaxby also has
impressive teaching facilities, supported by a qualified
and experienced PGA Golf Professional.
Their latest addition is a purpose built driving range,
floodlit by Abacus Lighting, a leading provider of
sports lighting systems. In designing the lighting
scheme for this particular project, the Abacus’ sports
lighting engineers faced a particular design challenge.
Given the size of the ball, and the high speed it
travels, high lighting levels are required to ensure
adequate visual tracking of the flight of the ball.
However, given the orientation of the driving range, it
actually faces a major intersection with the A1 and A59
York/Harrogate Road, control of light pollution would be
paramount.
Achieving the required lighting levels whilst
controlling light pollution is a particular design
challenge, but one which Abacus’ sports lighting
engineers have a wealth of experience in. To achieve the
required design, Abacus put forward a berm lighting
system. This particular system utilises asymmetric beam
floodlights mounted within the range and therefore are
not required to punch light over such long distances.
Consequently, lamp sizes can be reduced to 250W & 400W
High Pressure Sodium; 400W & 1KW metal Halide.
The lighting scheme comprised of 24 berm systems
comprising of two floodlights fitted with a 400w High
Pressure sodium light source. With regards to lighting
levels, the lighting design engineers achieved 50 Lux at
the furthest target from the bay.
Flaxby Golf & Country Club will be shortly adding to
their list of facilities a 9 hole academy Golf course
and a Four Star Hotel & Spa complex.
