BIFM Chairman Leads Call for Greater Workspace Flexibility

Advanced Ergonomic Technologies (AET) and Business Environments’ provided a platform for Mick Dalton, chairman of the BIFM (British Institute of Facilities Management) to talk about the benefits of sustainable office design at their jointly-hosted Workspace Flexibility event, held recently at AET’s Head Office in East Grinstead.

The Workspace Flexibility event was designed to inform and educate facilities managers, property owners and businesses on the latest thinking in workspace design and the benefits it can bring to companies. The two-day event featured a series of presentations from prominent speakers in the sector. Mick Dalton’s session covered the impact of Part L of the Building Regulations on office relocations, and also explored how using a flexible approach can save valuable resources.

Other speakers at the event included Andrew Wilkes, leading design consultant and a judge at the recent BCO (British Council of Offices) Awards and Pedro Eslava, Marketing Director at Europe’s top modular partitioning company, Movinord. Andrew Wilkes discussed technologies for ecological responsibility in buildings using his experience working on projects for GCHQ and 3M, whilst Pedro Eslava examined the advantages demountable partitioning systems in a range of real-world applications.

Managing director of AET, Glan Blake Thomas, says,
“Sustainability is an increasingly important, decision-making factor in the office environment. Achieving workspace flexibility can substantially reduce energy and office churn costs for businesses – making it a good sustainable option - and, at the same time, create a comfortable environment that, studies show, will help encourage employee productivity and generate better business performance”.

The Workspace Flexibility event took place at AET’s Head Office The Center – a building which is itself a landmark in flexibility. Completely renovated by its owner, developer and first occupiers, AET, The Center provides 9 small businesses, with state-of-the-art, fully air-conditioned and easily reconfigurable commercial units available in a choice of flexible sizes ranging from 50ft2 upwards. The showroom at The Center featured displays off exciting new products from leading brands, specifically selected for their flexibility, reusability and sustainability.

New products and techniques on display at the Workspace Flexibility event included Herman Miller’s modular and incredibly versatile Abak furniture range, Movinord partitioning, Nesite raised access flooring, Hiross Flexible Space underfloor air conditioning and Electropatent power distribution systems. A showroom demonstrating these flexible technologies remains set up at The Center.

Throughout the event visitors had the chance to enter into a prize draw to win their very own Herman Miller Celle Chair. AET and Business Environment’s have announced the winner as leading design consultant, Andrew Wilkes.
