F-gas Regulation prompts high tech investment in Airedale Service Team

In anticipation of increased demand for qualified engineers to ensure its customers are F-gas compliant, Airedale is investing in more service engineers and more technology to improve their response time and efficiency.

Airedale Service Manager Adrian Trevelyan explains: “Each of Airedale’s 23 service engineers now has an upgraded lap top, easily portable in smart back-packs, which enables the engineer to communicate directly with AireTronix controllers on site, download system strategies and have instant and faster access to information.

“Satellite navigation is already saving about 30 minutes of an engineer’s time per visit as well as head office time previously spent directing engineers by phone. Engineers now go straight to the correct location without delay to the customer.

“In line with the company’s strict guidelines on health and safety in the workplace, each engineer now carries a personal oxygen monitor which can indicate lack of oxygen when working with acetylene and refrigerants in confined spaces. If the engineer’s safety is improved so is everyone else’s on site.”

The new F-gas regulation which is now European law, affects anyone that operates, uses or installs air conditioning and refrigeration. Due to become mandatory in Britain from 4 July 2007, the regulation puts the onus of responsibility on the operator to prevent leakage of F-gases and to repair any detected leaks as soon as possible. Since the operator will be responsible in the event of a breach of the legislation, the operator needs to take steps now to ensure:
• ACR equipment operated/owned is leak-tight
• Regular leak inspections are carried out according to guidelines
• Leaks are repaired immediately
• A follow-up inspection is carried out one month after repairs
• Installation and service personnel are properly certified
• Proper, specified records track refrigerant from design to disposal

Adds Adrian: “Proper certification is one of the key elements of the new regulation and operators need to be certified by 4 July 2007. Anyone who handles refrigerant at Airedale is qualified as a matter course and in gearing up to ensure our customer base will not be left exposed to the regulations, we have appointed two additional experienced service engineers in the last three months and are actively seeking more.”
