ARDEX and H & R Johnson tiles make a splash at the leisure centre

ARDEX UK, pioneers in the development of sophisticated, high performance tile installation products were delighted to play a significant role in the refurbishment of the Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre. Following fire damage in 2004, a comprehensive re-development of the leisure centre was undertaken, which would incorporate a new state-of-the-art swimming pool complex. By working in partnership with Cottrell Brickwork Ceramics Ltd of Ipswich, ARDEX provided the ideal system of preparation, screeding, rendering, tiling and grouting as a solution for fixing the H & R Johnson tiles within the new pool complex. Bury St Edmund’s resident and Managing Director of ARDEX UK, Peter Bell, whose children were regular users of the leisure centre, was pleased to be asked to fix the last tile of the project into place.

The impressive new pool complex consists of a 33 metre main pool which has a fixed bulkhead and moveable floor fitted on one side, a 25 metre pool, plus a smaller pool with a moveable floor which will enable the depth to change from 2.6 metres to deck level.

Despite strong competition from another adhesive manufacturer, ARDEX’s enviable track record of successful installations featuring H & R Johnson tiles meant they remained the tile fixer’s choice of adhesive supplier.

To commence the project, the pool bases were repaired using ARDEX EB 2 rapid hardening screed which provides a strong and flat base whilst allowing the tiles to be fixed just 3 hours later. To fix the slip resistant ceramic pool floor tiles ARDEX-FLEX 5001 grey flexible tile adhesive was specified. Suitable for internal, external and immersed locations, as well as being suitable for use with all types of tiles, including fully vitrified and porcelain, ARDEX-FLEX 5001 delivers superb adhesion, very high yield, plus excellent slump resistance and adjustability. To grout the tile joints in the pool, ARDEX-FLEX FL grey rapid setting flexible grout was used.

All of the pool walls were rendered with ARDEX AM 100 fast track one coat tiling render. ARDEX AM 100 offers rapid hardening properties which enabled tiles to be fixed just 2 hours after application, delivering a time saving of at least two weeks compared to a traditional wall render. To improve the falls on the smaller pool floor, an application of ARDEX S 21 bedding mortar was used which allowed tiling to commence after just 3 hours.

The pool wall surround tiles were fixed with ARDEX X 7 G grey tile adhesive in conjunction with ARDEX E 90 admix. Developed to be ideal for use with most natural stone and all ceramic tiles, including fully vitrified and porcelain, the combination of ARDEX X 7 G and ARDEX E 90 has been extensively proven throughout many domestic and commercial tiling environments.
ARDEX-FLEX FL grey rapid setting flexible grout was used to grout the tile joints.

Prior to tiling, the treads and risers of the steps in the spectator gallery were treated with ARDEX WPC, which provides a rapid drying waterproof protection coat. ARDEX WPC helps to minimise downtime as tile fixing can commence just 2 hours after application of the second waterproof coat, significantly quicker than other systems on the market which require up to 24 hours drying time before further work can commence. The tiles were fixed with ARDEX-FLEX 5001 grey flexible tile adhesive and the tile joints were grouted with ARDEX WA epoxy grout. Easy to apply and clean off, ARDEX WA provides a waterproof and chemically resistant joint from 2-12mm wide and is the economical and ideal choice for use where high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are vital.
