British Gypsum wins AMEC Sustainability Award

British Gypsum’s commitment to waste reduction and recycling has won them top place in the sustainability category of the 2006 AMEC ‘Supplier of the Year Awards’.

The award, presented to British Gypsum at a special awards dinner at Old Trafford on 10th October, was for plasterboard system supply and product recycling at Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital Treatment Centre, an NHS Estates Procure 21 project.

Working closely with AMEC and specialist drylining contractor, G.T. Contracts, British Gypsum’s team of design, site support and recycling specialists, implemented a range of waste reduction and recycling measures for the project, which supported AMEC’s sustainability programme and 10% year-on-year target for landfill waste reduction.

Ongoing collaboration between the three companies allowed the number of plasterboard specifications on the site to be minimised, and bespoke sizes produced which, combined with specially engineered solutions for walls and bulkheads, reduced the amount of waste produced on site. A waste plasterboard recycling scheme was then established using British Gypsum’s innovative Plasterboard Recycling Service (PRS), to remove and recycle any plasterboard waste that was produced.

More than 80 tonnes of gypsum plasterboard scrap was removed from the site, recycled and then re-fed into British Gypsum’s manufacturing process, bringing significant environmental benefits, reducing landfill costs for AMEC and contributing significantly to improved site safety and a reduction in ‘slips, trips and falls’ on the site. The overall process also helped to ensure that the construction programme was met, and led to a reduction in defects.

Presenting the award, John Moss, Managing Director of AMEC’s design and project services division, said: “This was an excellent example of collaborative working between AMEC, British Gypsum and G.T.Contracts, which has demonstrated the kind of environmental results that can be achieved through good design, careful specification of products and British Gypsum’s innovative Plasterboard Recycling Service.”

As a result of the experience with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Contract, AMEC has now signed a framework agreement with British Gypsum, which will see PRS used on other AMEC projects across the UK.
