Cablofil keeps rail tunnel installation on track

Steel wire cable tray from Cablofil is helping to ensure that mechanical and electrical installations in 6.5 kilometres of rail tunnels at Terminal 5 will be completed on time later this summer. Dick Cangiliaosi, mechanical and electrical project manager for Balfour Kilpatrick at Heathrow Terminal 5, says: "We're involved in the Heathrow Express and Piccadilly Line extensions to Heathrow Terminal 5." Balfour Kilpatrick has designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the M&E infrastructure, ventilation system and building services for two twin-bore tunnels and a six-platform railway station under the main terminal building.

Although prefabricated services modules constructed by Balfour Kilpatrick and Boultings of Warrington, carry pipework and wire mesh cable tray under the railway station's platforms, the services for the tunnels do not lend themselves to modularisation because of limited access and tunnel cant/curvature. Instead, adds Cangiliaosi, 90 per cent of the mechanical and electrical installation was fixed conventionally on site. Prefabricated brackets to support cable trays and other services are bolted to the tunnel walls through pre-formed or pre-drilled holes in the cast concrete sections. Cablofil, which is quick to shape and fix, is well suited to conventional installation in the tunnels, and is flexible enough to accommodate tunnel cant/curvature.
