Carrier Air Conditioning vital to the Benjamin Franklin House restoration

Two Carrier R410A Split system air conditioners are being used to meet specialist cooling requirements within a recently restored and opened, Grade 1 listed, Georgian House in central London, that was once the London home of Dr Benjamin Franklin – scientist, diplomat, philosopher, inventor, Founding Father of the United States and much more than most Brits or Americans usually know.

The House, at 36 Craven Street, is the world’s only remaining Franklin home and is one of the most important Anglo-American heritage sites on either side of the Atlantic. Now it contains a hi-tech, Historical Experience tourist offering, and a Student Science Centre and research facility.

The air conditioning installation is vital to the preservation of historic items in the cellar displays and to visitor comfort during the first of several audio-visual experiences in the house. The second system keeps the audio-visual control equipment itself cool in its behind the scenes storage location at the top of the house.
Benjamin Franklin conducted numerous important experiments in the House between 1757 and 1775 including measuring the effects of the Gulf Stream, exploring Daylight Saving Time and exploring bi-focal lenses.

The building restoration took eight years and has cost £3 million, raised through sponsorship and the Heritage Lottery Fund. A further £1 million is still needed to secure the future of the building and the fulfilment of its educational aims.
