Frenger supplies first major chilled beam project into Australia
Frenger Systems has supplied more than 2000 of their
passive chilled beams to the project “The Bond” in
Sydney. This landmark building is the first major
Australian project to utilise passive chilled beam
technology.
Further to extensive project testing at the Company’s UK
and Swedish facilities Frenger’s CARAT
Radiant/Convective passive chilled beam was selected.
The chilled beam layout had to accommodate future
partitioning and fit-out requirements, whilst delivering
exceptional comfort levels under the most extreme
external conditions. During a recent Sydney heat wave
internal temperatures were maintained at 23.5oC whilst
the external temperatures soared to 42oC, and this was
achieved with no modification to the chilled water flow
temperature of 15oC.
The Bond has received many national and international
awards and the utilisation of passive chilled beams has
meant that it is the first Australian commercial
building to achieve the much-acclaimed 5-Star energy
usage rating (Australian Building Greenhouse Rating).
Many Australian clients are now looking to adopt the use
of chilled beam technology – both passive and active –
and Frenger are in the process of supplying such
materials to large projects in Melbourne and Adelaide.
Frenger’s CARAT passive chilled beam looks and operates
like no other beam on the market today – it does not use
traditional closely-spaced fins, and cools by Radiation
AND convection (unlike most passive beams that cool by
convection alone). Positioned above a perforated metal
ceiling system, CARAT delivers unrivalled levels of
cooling capacity and occupancy comfort; up to 150 w/m2
of cooling
with no drafts and no noise. Furthermore, because a
significant amount of the cooling is delivered via a
Radiant effect the product moves less air and therefore
CARAT can be used with very small ceiling perforations
(2.4mm diameter holes and 28% free area), making it
virtually invisible from below.
Apart from the success of “The Bond” Frenger have
designed, supplied and installed CARAT chilled beams on
many major UK projects.
