S-Quad – the inside story

Fire detection is essential in all public and private buildings but it’s usually assumed that protection against fire is something that the occupants want, indeed it’s hard to envisage a situation where this is not always the case. Strangely there are situations where intentionally defeating a fire protection system is the aim of those within the environment; even worse, occupants may be determined to cause themselves harm. In prisons for example, these situations need to be considered, with the additional risk that in-mates may even want to start and use a fire to a cause a disturbance or facilitate an escape.

To provide adequate protection, manufacturers need to think beyond the basic point source detector traditionally sited in living and sleeping accommodation. Detection within the duct providing ventilation for a number of cell-blocks has commonly been the solution for prisons, but these can cause delays in identifying the precise location of the fire and may not work in the event of failure of the HVAC system due to power loss, for example. Some manufacturers have investigated the use of vandal-proofed standard point detectors in these challenging installations - but even if the occupant isn’t able to damage the actual detector, malicious activation is still too easy.

Gent by Honeywell however has taken an existing product, its S-Quad dual angle Optical Heat with CO sensor, and sited it in the individual prison cell ventilation ducts. It is then able to identify which particular cell a fire has started in, allowing faster response times to incidents. It’s multi-criteria sensing techniques also minimise false and, in this instance, nuisance alarms. The sensing device also houses sounder, strobe and voice alerts addressable to the individual cell in which it is installed.

The S-Quad sensor was tested in the presence of representatives from the Home Office for typical risks within a cell environment. The results demonstrated that S-Quad immediately identified which cell was affected, and detected all of the fire types tested within acceptable time periods set by the Home Office. In addition, the S-Quad was effective at ignoring cigarette smoke for periods of time considerably longer than would be expected with other types of detection.

Gent has also identified a method of monitoring the HVAC system using the input module built into every S-Quad sensor to monitor the airflow within each individual duct allowing detection of intentionally blocked vent grills or catastrophic failure of the vent system.

After the experiment, Gent were delighted to hear the general consensus from the Home Office was that the S-Quad solution from Gent would contribute massively towards improving the protection of life and property in UK prisons and has now installed this solution in prison sites within the UK.
