Mozart…according to Heinz Spoerli

As with most opera companies throughout the world, the Zurich Opera wanted to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart this autumn by programming four pieces of Mozart’s music, including his final work, the Enchanted Flute.

Heinz Spoerli wanted to pay tribute to the genius of Mozart by choreographing “moZART”, which opened on 3 September 2006 in Zurich. The ballet was presented as a “harmonious mix” (ZART means soft in German) of Mozart’s chamber music and the music of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.

Director of the Basle Ballet from 1973 to 1991, then of the Zurich Opera (after Dusseldorf from 1991 to 1996) Heinz Spoerli is the first Swiss Choreographer since Jean-Georges Noverre to achieve international recognition. His repertoire includes around 70 short pieces and a dozen ballets-soirées. From Giselle (1976) to Sleeping Beauty (1995), not forgetting Swan Lake (1986), Romeo and Juliet (1977) and Cinderella (2000), he has continued to revive the classics. But he also created a vivacious La Fille mal Gardée (1981) and other lively works, such as John Falstaff (1984) and Die Nacht aus Blei (1985).

Not content with managing a company of 38 dancers and directing new choreographies each year, Heinz Spoerli headed the professional Swiss ballet school from 1995 to 2001 and in 2001 founded a Junior Ballet Company, which brought together a dozen or so young dancers of all nationalities at the end of their training. In addition, he has created a foundation whose objective is to ‘contribute to the preservation of the art of dance and the public interest which it brings’.
