Inclusive play equipment transforms Luton playground

Equipment from Playworld Systems has helped transform a tired and under-used playground in Lewsey into a fun and busy hot-spot for local families to play and exercise together.

The project to re-build the 15-year-old bark-pit play area was part of Luton Borough Council’s commitment to providing inclusive play under the Disability Discrimination Act.

As well as being inclusive, the brief for the new Lewsey Park Play Area was to make it exciting and appropriate to the taste and trends of children in the 2 to 14 year old age group. The Council wanted to give the children a mix of traditional and contemporary equipment with a large central play feature for impact.

Equipment from Playworld Systems has helped transform a tired and under-used playground in Lewsey into a fun and busy hot-spot for local families to play and exercise together.

“We selected Playworld Systems for the project because of the quality and variety of product on offer including a strong portfolio of accessible play products”, said Andrew Pitchford, Technical Officer for the Council. He went on to explain, “In particular, we were impressed with the company’s Challenger Multi Play system and felt sure that it would be ideal as a beacon for Lewsey Park. It also allowed us to distinguish the site from others and add excitement as it was different to other existing systems in the area.”

The robust Challenger Multi Play system has many accessible components including a transfer station for ease of access, low angle deep tread stairways, handrails on all bridges, ramps and stairways; ground level play activities, wide slides and interactive panels.

The unit includes some fitness equipment to encourage youngsters and parents to exercise together. Playworld Systems’ managing director Jerry Widdas explained, “This encourages the facility to become a multi-generational park not just ‘somewhere to take the kids’”.

Commenting on the success of the project, Mr Pitchford said, “The project management from Playworld Systems during the works was excellent as was the quality of workmanship. Importantly the local children love it and are absolutely all over it! It looks what it is – dynamic. It’s a big attraction for all the family as we had hoped.”
