SPC Heat Pipes – Article On Airdoors

With rising energy costs and increasing environmental concerns, the need for well insulated and energy efficient buildings is high on the designer’s agenda. However when it comes to entrance doors there are a conflicting set of requirements. To allow free building access, or to openly invite access to the building, the entrance doors often need to be open. This results in high heat losses as natural convection allows large volumes of warmed air to escape the building.

Air curtains provide the means to reconcile the conflict. The air curtain stops the natural convection cycle, thus reducing heat losses from open doors by up to 80%.

However it is very important to select an Air curtain with the correct performance for the doorway. With insufficient velocity and volume of air, for example, it is possible that heat losses will be increased. Once the correct air performance has been selected, the method of control has to be selected to give maximum efficiency for the entrance usage. This could be via manual controls, thermostatic controls, door switches or BMS systems.

It is also important to be able to select an Air Curtain which can be fixed in the correct position to be most effective, and which architecturally matches or enhances the building entrance, bearing in mind that the entrance provides visitors or customers with the first impressions of the building or organisation.
