NEW ARTISTA® Toughened Fusing Glass and Coloured Frits and Powders

Increasing appreciation of the endless design possibilities offered by glass fusing has led to a very significant growth in the use of this technique in this country in the last few years. Fused panels are made by placing various pieces coloured glass in a design onto a larger piece of glass and then fusing them all together in a kiln. The result is a unique colourful design with subtle transitions between the fused glasses.

The market leader in this exciting sector is ARTISTA® from SCHOTT, Europe’s leading specialist glass manufacturer. ARTISTA® glasses are produced with the same co-efficient of expansion and are guaranteed to be fusing compatible. ARTISTA® is available in a wide range of colours and in large sizes.

To comply with the British Building Regulations glazing in many domestic and commercial premises must meet specified safety standards by either not breaking or breaking safely under strong impact into small harmless granules. This can only be achieved with laminated or toughened glass. Whilst ARTISTA® fused panels can be encapsulated inside a 3-ply laminate, the resultant laminated ‘sandwich’ will be quite thick and heavy. SCHOTT is now pleased to announce the introduction of a range of ARTISTA® Thin Glasses (approx 1.5mm thickness) which when fused with the thicker ARTISTA® glasses, can be toughened in a conventional furnace to produce a thin safety glass. This safety glass is suitable for installation in so-called ‘critical areas’ to combine the art of fused glass with the practicality of safety glazing. Designers can now take full advantage of the large ARTISTA® sizes to maximum effect in a wide variety of locations including furniture, door panels and partitions, to name just a few.

In addition SCHOTT has introduced a range of ARTISTA® frits and powders which can be combined with the flat glasses to produce stunning design effects. These frits and powders are fully fusing compatible with the established ARTISTA® glass range and will be welcomed by designers to further enhance their options.
