Sapa Building System completes renovation of Bank HQ

Sapa Building System has completed an extensive renovation project at the headquarters of Dexia Bank in Brussels.

The challenging brief for this project was to renovate the buildings with the proviso that the internal view from the facade must be maximised and at the same time provide ventilation and shading from the sun. A semi-active curtain wall was chosen for this project and was the first of its type to be installed in Belgium.

Semi-active curtain walls consist of double glazing on the outside with a blind on the inside which operates automatically according to the amount of sunlight. The advantage of this type of active curtain wall compared with a passive one is that it provides a more suitable climate inside the building and thereby reduces total energy consumption.

The close cooperation between the architect Jo Crepain, the contractor Groven+ and Sapa Building System resulted in finding a solution for replacing the total existing sandwich panel construction with a specially designed 350 mm wide single extrusion profile which was possible due to the specialist extrusion capabilities at Sapa.

The façade elements were factory-assembled which ensured that once they reached site they could be fitted efficiently and quickly which helped to ensure the project ran to schedule.

Developed in Belgium, the Elegance 52 system has been widely used for projects across Europe and is now available to specifiers in the UK with a strong technical support team behind it and many Sapa fabricators now trained in its correct specification, use and installation.
