Toshiba heating capacity is key to specification

A striking, new, architect-designed, small office development outside Bristol is using Toshiba Split system heat pump air conditioning predominantly to satisfy all its heating requirements.

The system provides cooling when necessary, but this was not the reason for its initial selection. The offices are high specification units in landscaped grounds, and while cooling is an attractive part of the package that they offer tenants, the principal reason for specifying this system was its capacity to heat the space effectively.

The two 10 kW capacity Twin-split Toshiba Digital Inverter systems with ceiling cassettes have been installed at the two storey 195 square metre Milbury House building, by Gloucestershire based contractor EESICOOL Air Conditioning.

Rising energy prices, and the increasing efficiency of digital inverter-driven Toshiba air conditioning systems, are beginning to create a trend towards the application of air conditioning specifically on the basis of its COP. An increasing number of this type of installation is being sold by Toshiba in the UK and Europe.

Each system has a COP of more than 3.5 at full capacity and considerably more at typical low-load conditions all year round. For the developer, it was also extremely important not to have perimeter space taken up by radiators.

It has also proved extremely valuable to have been able to use the dehumidification capability of the air conditioning while the building has been unoccupied. This has helped to maintain the building fabric. Part of the ground floor is sited below ground level as it is set into a bank within the gardens, giving rise to potentially higher than usual levels of humidity.

EESICOOL worked closely with the building contractors throughout the project, which also enabled all the pipework to be integrated within the floors and walls.

Externally, the two air conditioning outdoor units are neatly sited on a plinth in a concealed location.
