First application of ‘heating only’ air conditioning for Toshiba

For the first time in the UK, Toshiba Air Conditioning’s Super Digital Inverter Split systems have been specifically applied for use purely on a ‘heating only’ basis. This is a true sign of the times.

As energy costs continue to rise, and as air conditioning heat pump efficiencies are improving all the time, such applications may become more common. The use of this type of heating has dramatically changed the life of the building in which it is being used and that of its occupiers.

Gloucestershire-based air conditioning contractor EESICOOL was asked by a local village Methodist Church to use heat pumps to replace its antiquated electric bar heating system. The building has no gas and no water-based radiators. The efficiency of the Toshiba Super Digital Inverter Split systems has provided an extremely effective solution to the need for energy efficient heating. The installation has an average COP of over 4.0 at full capacity, and considerably more at more typical part load conditions.

The old system provided 30 kW of heating. The new system provides 35 kW. Two cassette systems and one high wall system have been used. All the outdoor units are mounted on a concealed roof area, away from potential interference by vandals.

The church’s verger says that £45 was saved during the first quarter after installation. Although this may seem small the client was nevertheless absolutely delighted. The savings would have been much larger but for the fact that instead of using the heating only on Sundays it is now used seven days a week!

The building has been brought into use for far more activities. The atmosphere is pleasant. It has now proved possible to change the old wooden windows to double glazed ones to improve insulation. Best of all, the seating has been changed now that the fabric won’t deteriorate with dampness – everyone has benefited from this ‘luxury’. The air conditioning has a dehumidifying effect, which has been positive for the fabric of the whole building. Into the bargain, the church is even using the system for cooling on occasions, and attendances have reportedly improved - possibly as a result?

The church has also benefited from the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme as the systems are double A rated for energy efficiency. It has also further benefited from Value Added Tax being levied at only 5% on this type of installation.
