Wieland’s gesis® Helps Students See the Light

Installation of lighting at Edinburgh’s Telford College, one of Scotland’s largest further education colleges, has made use of Wieland Electric’s gesis® GST18i 6 pole connectors. This connector has been specially designed for the electrical supply to dimmable lamps with an additional permanent supply. The College has been relocated and reconfigured to accommodate more than 21,000 students and 600 staff members whilst consolidating four existing campus sites. A prominent frontage gives the college an identity and creates a gateway to the Granton Waterfront regeneration area.

Wieland's 6 pole connectors were selected for the project by Thorn Lighting, who were able to supply a complete package for the project at approximately £600K. The connectors have been joined to a custom made Thorn fitting which is then mounted on a corrugated raft which, in turn, incorporates up to four luminaires. Connector leads have been used to connect each raft and the modularisation is completed with the use of Wieland’s 6 pole connectors.

Each wing of the building has a bright three-story central atrium that provides light and air to the college’s general purpose class rooms, whilst also providing a flexible educational resource. The atrium areas have been designed as “learning streets”. The two wings of the building are linked at the centre by glass sided bridges on three levels. Art studios extend the length of the top floor, which has vertical circulation at both ends. A ‘hub’ at the centre of the ground floor acts as the location for dining and social interaction, and has places for people to wait for hairdressing and beauty treatments.

The educational areas are lit by Thorn using a bespoke suspended raft system which incorporated the lighting, sound acoustics, smoke detectors, PIR’s for the lighting controls and PA address speakers. The raft was designed around the clients design brief to take into account certain factors, including sound, owing to the exposed concrete ceilings/coffers. The raft sits within the coffer and provides direct/indirect lighting and within the raft panels acoustic padding has been incorporated to deaden the sound/echo within the area. The raft also provides a base for the installation of PA address and fire detection systems.

Surface luminaires were used throughout the remainder of the project, including the use of Thorn’s AVISO lantern on one of the upper levels along a corridor with a high, glazed ceiling where it has been mounted onto special columns built into handrails. David Blair of Thorn Lighting commented “Plug/socket connections for panels along each raft run were identified as being the easiest way to connect through wiring together during installation. Wieland connectors were an obvious choice with a reputation for functionality and reliability, plus Thorn has a good relationship with Wieland, its connectors are used as standard on all custom made luminaires”.

Wieland gesis® GST18 connectors have been designed for the safe and simple installation of lighting and other building services components, utilising a mechanical coding arrangement so that male and female connectors can only be mated in one way. The gesis® GST18 range ensures that all contacts are connected simultaneously, with the earth contact in advance, whilst all conducting parts are protected against accidental touching, whether connected or disconnected.
